US actor and activist Jane Fonda announced on Wednesday that she had cancer and had started chemotherapy.

“Diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and started chemotherapy,” Fonda, an Academy Award-winning Democrat, wrote on her Instagram account.

“I feel very lucky because it’s a very treatable cancer and has an 80% survival rate,” she said.

Fonda, an active environmentalist and a self-described social activist, claims she is better off than many others in the same situation.

“In America, most families have to deal with cancer at least once, and it’s wrong that so many people don’t get the quality care that I do,” she said.
