R. Kelly was found guilty on Wednesday on three charges of child inducement into criminal sexual behaviour and three counts of making child sexual abuse material. A 12-person jury found the 55-year-old guilty on six of the thirteen accusations against him. These six offences were committed by the same 14-year-old girl under the alias Jane.

Kelly was cleared of obstruction of justice conspiracy charges coming from a 2002 state case. This case concerned one of Kelly’s victims, who met with Kelly and her parents after allegations of a video of Kelly and Jane engaging in sexual actions started to circulate. According to Jane, Kelly acknowledged their sexual connection at this encounter.

Jane denied having a sexual connection with Kelly and participating in his child pornographic movies when she and her father were summoned to testify before a grand jury in 2002. Jane stated before the jury in this year’s lawsuit that in 2002, Kelly spoke with her about “loyalty” and “denying” the connection and the sex video.

Chicago cleared Kelly of child pornography charges in 2008 due to Jane’s denial that she was the victim seen in the videotapes.
Jane first met R. Kelly at age 13. Jane’s parents felt safe allowing her to spend the night and even the weekend alone at Kelly’s house once he became her godfather. She was 14 when she started a sexual connection with Kelly. Jane, who is now 37 years old, claimed that she and Kelly had “hundreds” of sexual encounters before her 18th birthday.

Jane chose in 2019 to assist investigators, several years after Kelly sexually molested her. “I no longer wanted to carry his lies,” Jane testified.

The punishment handed down on Wednesday may add years to the 30-year jail term Kelly received in Brooklyn last year.

“There was a mixed verdict, but we won more counts than we lost,” Jennifer Bonjean, Kelly’s lawyer, said outside court following the verdict. “If this jury concluded that he was guilty on the first three counts, would they care enough to consider the evidence on the rest? And they demonstrated that they did. They did their job. They looked at each count separately.”

After being sentenced to 30 years in jail at the Metropolitan Detention Center in July, Kelly was put on suicide watch. His attorney, Bonjean, maintained that the musician was not suicidal and that the jail officer put him on suicide watch as “punishment.” She said that the detention facility is conducted like a “gulag” and that when she and her colleagues phoned the jail to inquire about Kelly’s situation, the guards repeatedly hung up on them and “laughed and were quite disrespectful.” As a consequence of Kelly’s legal team filing a lawsuit, he was removed from the suicide watch at the jail.
