Tennis player Victoria Azarenka, on the 3rd, appealed that the tennis world needs to protect more female players.

Azarenka said player protection was a top concern at the WTA Players’ Council, adding that predatory incidents were happening “everywhere”.

In the case, Fiona Ferro, coach Pierre Bouteyre went to trial earlier this week on allegations of rape and sexual assault of a minor. Ferro, now 25, was allegedly raped by Bouterre between 2012 and 2015. He denies the allegations and claims the relationship was consensual, which Ferro denies.

Azarenka said that if she had a daughter, she would hesitate to let her go pro if something like this happened. She then praised Ferro for making it public, “I applaud her for her bravery. I hope she comes out of this situation stronger and that her game doesn’t end because of this.”

Azarenka, competing in the US Open, beat Croatia’s Petra Martic 6-3, 6-0 in the third round on the same day. She’ll next have a shot at making it to the last eight, where she’ll face Czech No. 22 Karolina Pliskova, who beat No. 13 Belinda Bencic of Switzerland.
