‘Carter,’ a Korean action film, lands at No. 1 on Netflix’s weekly chart

The Korean language action thriller “Carter” debuted at No. 1 on Netflix’s newest weekly non-English film viewership ranking.

The plot revolves around Carter, an amnesiac spy portrayed by Joo Won, who is sent to transfer a child to North Korea to act as an antidote to a disease that has ravaged the Korean Peninsula.

According to Netflix on Tuesday, the Netflix Korean Movie original, which was released last Friday, received 27.3 million hours of viewing for the week of Aug. 1-7, leading the official top 10 list for non-English films accessible on the site (U.S. time).

It was the first Korean-language film to top the streamer’s ranking for the genre since Netflix disclosed weekly audience statistics in late June of last year.

“The Pirates: The Last Royal Treasure,” a Korean action adventure film, was ranked second for the week of February 28-March 6.

“Carter,” directed by Jung Byung-gil of “The Villainess” (2017), became in the top ten most-watched non-English TV series in 90 countries in a single week.

On the television front, the South Korean legal drama “Extraordinary Attorney Woo” ranked top on the streamer’s popularity ranking for non-English TV series, with 67 million hours watched in the same week.

It’s the show’s fourth No. 1 finish after breaking into the top 10 five weeks ago.

“Woo” is about a lawyer named Woo Young-woo (Park Eun-bin), who is intelligent with an exceptional memory but has no social skills and empathy due to autism.
