Brazilian fisherman rescued after 11 days in a freezer after his ship sank

Sailors rescued a Brazilian fisherman after spending 11 days in a freezer in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean when his boat sank en route, according to a UN news agency report writes The Rio Times.

The 44-year-old entered the freezer on the boat in an attempt to survive and went 11 days without food or water.

The rescue was carried out by sailors from another boat who found the freezer floating in the sea near Suriname. According to the media, Mr Rodrigues was detained in Paramaribo, the capital of Suriname, for 16 days because he did not have his official documents. Nation World News.

Mr Rodrigues said he was initially treated as an illegal immigrant with no official documents but was then booked on a plane ticket back to Brazil, which took him to Belem.

In an interview with Brazilian media, Mr Rodrigues said he decided to put himself in the freezer after noticing his boat was about to sink.

On August 11, he was rescued 450 kilometres (280 miles) from where his boat sank. According to Nation World News, he was dehydrated and collapsed on the floor of a Surinamese fishing boat.

After being rescued from a situation where he was completely dehydrated, confused, wearing torn clothes and sunburned, Mr Rodrigues first asked the sailors for water.

It is unclear how the freezer coped with rough seas and high tides during the entire trip, the newspaper added, citing local authorities.
